How to Edit Live WordPress Content

by Mar 26, 2019Wordpress Plugins

Have a lot visitors coming to your website? That’s great!

To keep your website up to date, attract new visitors, and maintain your current visitors, you have to do regular content updates. The only downside to content updates is that you have to be careful about how you edit your live WordPress content and control when the updates will be seen.

Why does this matter? If the content is displayed at different times, your website will present different versions of information to your visitors and may cause confusion and make your website seem unreliable.

In addition, your content update may require multiple reviews and edits before it goes live – you wouldn’t want your viewers to see multiple revisions and edits.

The great news is that you can edit your content and view the changes without publishing your updates on your live WordPress website by using a plugin.

Normally to see changes on any post or page, you would only have two options.

  • The first option is to add your changes in the backend editor and save the page or post. After the changes are saved they would appear live on your website and your website’s visitors can see them.
    • This situation isn’t ideal because you would have the risk of updating multiple edits and revisions. After the post or page is published, you and/or your other content editors may see something that should be changed and will require you to update and change it multiple times. The multiple live updates could be avoided if you and your team reviewed the changes before publishing them live. Depending on when the edits were added and saved, viewers will see different information.
  • The second option is to add your updates with the backend editor and then save the post or page as a draft.
    • Your visitors won’t see the new edits or future edits, but they won’t be able to access the page or post anymore until it’s published live again. This situation is not ideal at all because now no one but administrators will have access to see your page or post. You or your team can also forget to publish the post or page when it’s eventually finished with edits

If this happened to a restaurant’s menu page, customers won’t have access to the menu to order food or place a to-go order. Placing important pages and posts in draft mode and not publishing it live, this will cause your website to lose traffic, appear broken, and ultimately your business can lose money and traffic.

How to Edit Live WordPress Content using Revisionize
Revisionize makes updating live pages quick and easy

Revisionize is a great plugin created by Jaime Chong. This plugin allows you to edit live WordPress Content without causing any continuity issues with your visitors and make it appear that your website has broken links.

The Revisionize plugin first clones your post or page,  and then saves the clone as a draft.

While it’s saved as a draft you can edit and change the content in any way you please. Once you and/or your team approves of the edits and updates, you can publish the clone, which will add the changes to the original post or page and make it live. You can also schedule the clone to publish the changes live on a certain date and time.

To install this plugin simply download it from here and upload it to your WordPress website. Alternatively, you can go to Plugins > Add New and search for Revisionize. Once you find it, install it and activate it. Once your plugin is installed, go to your Pages list, underneath each page title you see a submenu which will contain a “Revisionize” option. This plugin also offers additional premium add ons to add even more functionality to this plugin. Some of these premium add ons include enhanced settings, and contributor permission settings.

Besides Revisionize, there are other revision plugins available. Revision Manager TMC by TheMasterCut is one of those plugin options.

This plugin features an option that will show you a window that compares the saved clone with previous revisions of the clone. This plugin can also set editing permissions with each of your content editors and automatically email your other content editors with changes made to each post or page.

So far, this plugin is one of the few available with Gutenberg compatibility. When this plugin is installed and activated, you will be able to access it and use it in a similar way that you access the Revisionize plugin.

Revision Manager by TMC

The other plugin option you have is Revisionary by Publish Press. This plugin has similar features as Revision Manager TMC, but offers unique features such as allowing your content team to leave comments of your post’s/page’s clone backend editor and allow content editors to post status updates of the content.

Another feature includes a Front-end preview display of Pending / Scheduled Revisions with a “Publish Now” link. Out of these three plugins, this one is the most popular with 4,000+ downloads.

Please be advised some of the features of this plugin are premium features only. Whichever plugin you select, please pay attention to see if the plugin has been tested and compatible with your website’s WordPress version. Adding plugins that aren’t compatible with your version of WordPress may cause bugs.

Updating content to a live WordPress website can be tricky, but utilizing the right plugins can make the job much easier. Scheduling regular content updates is just one of the many important factors that a good website needs. Websites need overall maintenance, design changes, plugin updates, and more.
